Hacking Away At The Corporate Octopus…& an Ed Reform Poem

August 1, 2013

Hofstra University Professor Alan Singer recently published the most moving and honest article regarding the corporate ed reform movement, Hacking Away At The Corporate Octopus

Abstact: This article documents the corporatization of education in the United States by private for-profit corporations often masquerading as non-profit foundations. Major players in what I call the Education-Foundation-Political-Industrial Complex include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (Microsoft), the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation (finance, real estate, and insurance), the Walton Family Foundation (Walmart), and Pearson, the British media mega-giant with its partnering Pearson Foundation. Among other things, Pearson as a partner of the National Governors Association (NGA) and Council of Chief State School Officers has been promoting common core standards, high-stakes standardized testing for students and teachers, andSingapore as a model for education in the United States, while constantly promoting Pearson products at conferences for educational officials….

Included in the email linking me to the article was a link to the following poem. I assume the author is Mr Singer, but it’s so good I couldn’t wait to post it!!

Fight the Power

Pearson man, don’t tell me,

Your plan is best on earth.

I know you don’t know

What education is really worth.

For all that glitters is not gold;

And our story has never been told:

Your friends will never see the light. Because we will stand up for our rights.

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!

Get up, stand up: don’t give up the fight!

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!

Get up, stand up: don’t give up the fight!

Companies are all selling,

Politicians are on their side,

We won’t listen to their yelling

Because we know they all lied.

Now we know what life is worth,

Organize to stop the worst:

And when we see the light,

Stand up for your rights.

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!

Get up, stand up: don’t give up the fight!

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights! Get up, stand up:

don’t give up the fight!

Fight the power!
Fight the power that be!
Fight the power!
Fight the power to make history!
